Semprini, 15 I 2009 [windows 7]
Yes, I admit it freely - yesterday, I installed the Thing mentioned in the subject on my PC (dual-processor 2 GHz Athlon with some 1.5 Gb of memory). What can I say - I was curious.
Anyway, for as far as I've been able to see in the few hours I used it, it works fairly well. The install itself went smoothly - everything I wanted to do myself (partition disk!), I could.
Something like an hour and a half later, I was equipped with Windows 7.
At first glance, Windows 7 looks a lot nicer than XP, at least. I haven't used Vista, so I don't know about that; it's not as nice as MacOS X, though.
So. About functionality. Of course, the first thing Windows tries to do is update itself via the Internet. Problem: no internet. Why? My motherboard does have a fairly standard Ethernet chip (3Com 3c905...) - oh, no driver.
I've been able to get the driver from 3Com through my Sun and an USB key (yay, bootstrapping Windows through OpenSolaris), but given that Windows' ISO image is only 2.1 Gb, a few more network card drivers might not be a bad idea, given how important they are...
Anyway, network configuration went smoothly and then I was able to install a beta version of some Norton anti-virus product, and update my drivers (including the one for my network card...).
That's about what I've been able to do yesterday evening. I'll try to write more about configuration, using other programs (OpenOffice! games!) and whatever I want to do later on...
